The 2009 Canada Games Host Society was deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death of Elmer MacFadyen, former minister of Community and Cultural Affairs for PEI and a friend of the 2009 Canada Games. Mr. MacFadyen died Friday, August 17 following a massive heart attack. He was 64.
Host Society President Joseph Spriet said, “Elmer was a huge supporter of the Prince Edward Island sport community overall, but especially, while Minister, he was instrumental in negotiating for the 2009 Canada Games.” MacFadyen was a Member of the Legislature since 1996.
After the recent provincial election which saw the government change, Mr. MacFadyen had expressed a keen interest to Spriet in volunteering for the 2009 event. Spriet added, “We had met shortly after the election, and Elmer clearly expressed that he still intended to be a part of the Games. I had looked forward to continuing to work with him.”
The Host Society sends its deepest condolences to Elmer’s wife Judy, sons Steven and Doug, and daughter Tara. Funeral service will take place Wednesday morning at Zion Presbyterian Church in Charlottetown.
