March 19, 2008, Summerside, PE – The PEI 2009 Canada Games Host Society today officially announced Aliant, Atlantic Canada’s leading communications and information technology provider, as its first major corporate sponsor at a news conference at Credit Union Place in Summerside. Aliant is providing $350,000 and will be the presenting sponsor of Men’s and Women’s Soccer at the Games.
“We are proud to support the 2009 Canada Games on Prince Edward Island,” said Joe Mosher, Aliant’s Vice President of Residential Marketing. “This is a natural fit for our organization given our support for amateur soccer and for Atlantic Canadian Olympic hopefuls through the Aliant Contenders Program. We believe in the spirit of every athlete who seeks to compete and Canada Games is an important stepping stone on the road to the Olympics.”
Prince Edward Islander and Olympic Hopeful Kara Grant, part of the Aliant Contenders Program, was introduced as an Athlete Ambassador for the 2009 Host Society to represent the Games in various capacities. Kara Grant is not only a world class elite athlete but also a Canada Games Alumnus from the 2001 Games where she competed in Athletics.
Wayne Carew, Vice-President of the Host Society explained, “We are so pleased that a community-minded, Atlantic Canadian company like Aliant is supporting this event and we look forward to working with them in the build up to the Games.” He added, “There are tremendous opportunities available to the business community in becoming a 2009 Canada Games sponsor while at the same time great potential for building relationships and working together to make these Games a great success from an economic, tourism, and athlete-centered perspective.”
The Canada Games, held every two years and alternating between winter and summer, is one of the largest multi-sport and cultural festivals in the world. In 2009, Prince Edward Island will host the Games from August 15-29, with the first week centered in Summerside with events staged throughout the Western half of the province and the second week in Charlottetown with events in the Eastern half of the Province. Over 4,400 athletes, coaches, and managers will come to Prince Edward Island to compete in 18 sports with over 6,000 volunteers needed to run the two week event.
The organization of the Canada Games is made possible thanks to the Government of Canada, provincial/territorial governments, Host Societies, the Canada Games Council and corporate supporters like Aliant.
